Charitable Effort:- On 11th & 12th June an intrepid group of Tarmac West employees embarked on a sponsored ascent (and descent) of the three highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales within a 24hr period. This was all done to raise up to £10,000 for the children's charity Sparks. McCarthy Taylor were pleased to be able to sponsor them in their efforts and would like to congratulate everyone involved on a superb effort. If you would like to contribute to their total you can do so by visiting the JustGiving site. And you can view some of the photos from the event here here and here.

Feathered squatters:- Back in early April one of our developers noticed a Pied Wagtail making its way in and out of the cigarette bin outside our office and carrying nestbuilding material. We immediately posted a sign to prevent anyone from using the bin. It's a month later and we now have a family of Blue Tits. At what point the Wagtails were evicted we cannot tell, but Blue Tit parents and four chicks are doing well and going by the noise it won't be long before the babies have fledged. If you'd like to see a full sized picture then click the button. Med Res. High Res.The latest news is that all four chicks have fledged and we're now waiting for the next brood.
Terrain data and maps available for the whole of Great Britan:- We are constantly asked to advise on the type of terrain data and imagery LSS users should be using for their planning application or terrain analysis. There are a lot of commercially available datasets available to buy, but since April 2010 the Ordnance Survey has released a selection of its data for free and which can be used commercially. However, it needs quite a lot of pre-processing, so we thought we'd take the strain, download the whole dataset and prepare it ready for use in LSS. OS OpenData
