McCarthy Taylor launch new programme of LSS training courses and a new training facility

New dedicated training suite opens

November 2008 saw us officially open our new dedicated training suite at our Birdlip site. With a state-of-the-art widescreen projector and widescreen Windows Vista Laptops we are able to offer a pleasant, comfortable environment in which to learn all about LSS.

Courses

As the number of LSS users increases year on year and the range of industries using the software continues to broaden, there is pressure on us to increase the number of standard training courses we run. Over the past couple of years we have regularly had to run two LSS Introduction training courses in a month to satisfy demand. So, instead of continuing to offer extra courses on an ad-hoc basis we have taken a look at the whole training provision and have come up with some new courses and a complete reorganisation of the monthly timetable.

Therefore, we havelaunched four new training courses using a timetable which enables new users to attend one course then, if necessary, after two weeks attend the next level. It is also clear that the training needs of a land surveyor or engineer are different from a designer and while each has to learn the basics when attending their first LSS training course, some of what one profession may need to know may not be of interest or value to another. Therefore, we have launched a new Introduction course called “LSS for Land Surveyors and Engineers”, a revamped Introduction course, a new Intermediate and an Advanced course which combines much of what used to be contained in the Advanced Design & Volumes Workshop, but this time with a hands-on approach. If you book two or more courses you'll now get a discount. One place remains at £150, but goes down to £120 a day if five or more days are ordered at the same time (not necessarily for the same person or for the same day).

Survey instrument workshops
As of January 2008 we have trained over 100 users in survey instrument workshops. Aimed at Leica System 1200, Trimble and Topcon Topsurv users, these full day workshops offer practical survey tips and configuration settings for users of these instruments. At £150 per person the courses represent excellent value for money and all previous attendees have gone away with an increased knowledge of how to make the most out of LSS and their survey equipment. Over time this will repay the cost of the course many times over.

The knowledge gained over the last few events has convinced us that there is a massive demand for good quality training involving survey instruments and LSS in combination and as a result we have decided to launch a completely new training course. “Practical Surveying with modern survey instruments”. This is a one day Bespoke course which is very much based on the survey instrument Workshops mentioned above and covers Leica System 1200, Trimble or Topcon instruments. It includes standardised instrument and LSS configuration, codelists and making the most of LSS reserved codes, download and upload. However, unlike the Workshops when equipment is provided by the manufacturers and you may be sharing the day with half a dozen other organisations, this is a Bespoke training course. For instance, we use your survey kit (we can deal with only one instrument make at a time). For £500+VAT (plus expenses if we come to you) you get up to six surveyors trained-up and it will save hours wasted on-site or back in the office sorting out errors in the coding or, even worse, missing or incorrectly collected data. Why not precede this course by attending our other new course, “LSS for Land Surveyors & Engineers”, more of which below.

LSS for Land Surveyors & Engineers
Over the years, as LSS has developed, much more functionality has been added in order to make the software more useful to a broader range of users. As a result, those topics of particular interest to a land surveyor or engineer can no longer be covered in a single day ‘Introduction to LSS’ course. So, in October we ran our first “LSS for Land Surveyors & Engineers” training course. Those who enrol are assumed to have attended the ‘Introduction to LSS’ course, so there is no overlap between the two. The new course covers in minute detail survey coding and the LSS loadfile, survey instrument configurations, traversing and quality assurance, editing including a detailed consideration of terrain and non-terrain features, the use of the selection filter and survey reporting. And for those using the latest survey equipment, subjects such as uploading codelists and setting-out data are covered. Please note that this course does not involve any hands-on survey equipment exercises or detailed consideration of specific instruments. These are left to the Workshops and the “Practical Surveying...” course which is described in the previous article.

The course has two main aims. First to improve on-site survey and office editing efficiency and second to make users aware of the various quality assurance measures available within LSS. Call Duane for a chat or visit our website for detailed course content.
